Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page;
So here’s my story:
Sadly, my mum was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, it was a shock to everyone. You never think it’s going to happen to you, or effect someone you love. It was a year of ups and downs, and the struggles of seeing my mum so ill and in so much pain - being too weak to do day-to-day activities. It was hard to watch my mother go through that and have to deal with that pain, it was so sad to witness.
I felt like I was losing my mum, sometimes I felt helpless and I didn’t know how to make things better. But then we discovered the ‘Maggies Centre’ which brought so much happiness to my mum. It brought back positivity at a time when it was almost impossible to see a break from reality. But this place brought that to my mum! She enjoyed the centre so much, it was so inspiring for her, talking to patients who were going through the same thing as she was. This made my mum no longer scared and she had a much more positive outlook on the future! She was even planning future holidays etc. It was so lovely to hear, as she was so determined to battle through the cancer and be well again! I can imagine this is the same for a lot of others who walk through the doors of the Maggies Centre, finding hope and the will to battle on.
The Maggies Centre always welcomed friends and family to come along too and gave support and advice for you if you needed it, which I found very comforting. Even if you simply wanted to grab a cup of tea and chill on the terrace in sun, they welcomed you with open arms. Every time we visited the centre it felt very homely, offering all different types of support classes – For example, there was a demonstration class on hair and make up, which my glamorous mum thoroughly enjoyed! I remember her coming home and showing me what she had learnt! I didn’t realise there were so many different ways you could tie a headscarf! It was just nice to see her smile again.
My mum was very popular at the Maggies Centre,always making people laugh, especially the staff! It was lovely to see her so positive! I don’t think my mum would have lived as long as she did without the help and support from friends and family and the Maggie centre! I remember her saying “when I have beaten this illness I want to become a volunteer at the centre to help other people ” which was so lovely because she had such a caring heart. But it also showed how much it mattered to her as I’m sure it does/has to many others.
However, sadly after a year, she began to get very ill and passed away 21.06.16, it was shock to everyone. We did not think the worst was going to happen at all as she was such a strong, independent woman! But even when going through this, we had so much support after she had passed away by all of the staff. We received a lovely card from the Maggies centre, my mum donated her wig to the centre to help with demonstration classes.
The GNR has always been on my to do list ! My mum ran the GNR a couple of times with her sister and my brother has done it to, so now it’s my turn to run 13.1 miles.
I would like to raise as much money as possible! As it’s going to a great cause, close to my heart and it would mean the world to me and I know it would to my mum too, to keep the Maggies Centre running to help many families in similar situations to what I was in. If you donate it will mean they get to continue supporting families and loved ones who are affected by cancer. I would be so grateful if you could take the time to donate, PLEASE! Every little counts!
Thank you for reading my story! Hopefully you can help me reach my target!
