Story
In 2006, I travelled to Ghana to teach at the Carolyn A Miller school on the Liberian refugee camp, Buduburam. The school provided free education to the Liberian diaspora, and played a critical role in teaching its students about the conflict that put them in exile. Truth, reconciliation and education underpin the school's firm belief that without these things, Liberia will never recover. As a young volunteer I was moved by the tenacity of the school's founder, Karrus Hayes, whom I have stayed in close touch with.
The school has relocated back to Liberia, which is now stable, and is continuing to provide free education to young Liberians as the country continues along the road to sustainability. All donations will go directly to the school for teaching equipment, building repairs, funds for a school bus, and teachers' salaries.
In June this year I will visit the school on its new premises - with the aim of raising awareness through teaching, writing and filming so that others know about the extraordinary work this school does.
I have also set up a twinning scheme between the school in Liberia and the North Norfolk Youth Hubs which I run in the UK, with the aim of building empathy between both communities. Young people from both countries Skype one another and learn about life on a different continent.
Liberia's leader, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, is Africa's first female President, and is a pioneer for change in West Africa. I have high hopes for Liberia, as does Sirleaf. But it needs the attention of the global community. Your donation will go straight to the school and help provide free, quality education for young Liberians
