The first time I learnt of dementia was at a young age when my Grandma was sadly diagnosed with the illness, she had to live in a care home where she lived, in Manchester, so my time with her was very limited.
A few years on and my Grandad was also diagnosed. Watching a loved one battle dementia is heartbreaking, what they once knew was no longer there. Their memories of friends, family and life in general becomes blurry and confusing...how scary that must feel. As a granddaughter spending time with my Grandad it became increasingly hard to see him struggle with remembering even the smallest of things. Near the end we would have the same conversations repeated, but that didn’t matter as it was just spending time with my Grandad that I cared about, and as hard as it was to see him that way, I am so glad that i was there with him and for him to spend time with his Great Grandchildren. Dementia is an illness that affects all family and friends when someone close to you is going through it, which is why I am organising this event to raise as much money as we can to help this wonderful charity.
