I am running the Great North Run 2023 in memory of my friend Izzy, who sadly passed away just 7 days before her 20th birthday, on the 10th May 2020. 

Izzy was diagnosed with a very rare form of kidney cancer in the summer of 2019, when she was having the time of her life working in Camp Small Valley in the US. She found herself experiencing jaw pain which was believed to be an infected wisdom tooth. When the tooth was removed, a tumour was found- Izzy flew back to the UK the very next day. A scan a few days later revealed Izzy's form of rare cancer, alongside the secondary tumours in her liver, adrenal glands, jaw, spine and pelvis; making her cancer stage 4 and incurable. 

Izzy underwent a variety of treatments over the next 7 months, which initially she seemed to be responding well too. However in February 2020, the tumour in her jaw had returned. Only a few months later, having shielded for 2 months alone, she passed away at home with her parents and older sister on 10th May 2020, aged only 19. 

I met Izzy in my first week at the University of Liverpool, where we became flatmates and shared so many happy times together. Izzy was one of the most kind, selfless and caring people I ever had the privilege to meet. You could never be in her company without having the biggest smile on your face. Claire House truly made her last year so special with the opportunities they provided, and they provided both her and her family fantastic support through such a truly difficult time. Claire House continue to offer support to Izzy's family, and numerous other families in similar unimaginable situations.
