Story

I completed the 30 plus mile walk planned in stages in early September on Dartmoor between churches finishing during the weekend of 13th/14th September 2014.

The first stage started at Shapley Common heading north  through Greencombe, Jursto, Woodcott,  past Meldon Hill and Meldon hall to Chagford. From Chagford Church I walked east to Great Weeke, Drewston, Greenwell, Stoncombe to Moretonhampstead parish church. I had a pint at the White hart in that old market town. From there I walked south west to North Bovey with its lovely parish church and green and pub. From there I walked west to Canna park, Shapley and then up a very steep path to Kings Tor and Shapley Tor and back to Shapley Common and the car. This was a total of 14 miles as the crow flies but probably more with ascents and descents.

The second walk started at Trendlebere Down through Houndtor wood alongside the river Bovey past Becky falls through water to the parish church of Manaton. I then headed north near Manaton Rocks and Foxworthy to Langstone, crossed the river Bovey at the Clapper Bridge then climbed to Hunters Tor, Raven's Tor and Sharpitor descending into Lustleigh to the parish church and a well earned pint of Jail ale at the Cleave Inn. After lunch I crossed the river to Wreyland which a chocolate box cover hamlet and crossed under the old railway line and back over the river and walked along the river back to Trendlebere Down to the car. This was circa 9 miles but probably more.

Our third walk started from Widecombe in the Moor taking a steep ascent up a well used bridle path that is part of the two moors way to Hamel Down. There are a number of ancient cairns, barrows and beacons towards Hameldown Tor. Latterly the ancient deserted village of Grimspound comes into sight which is very impressive. I then proceeded back travelling south east past Berry Pound Natsworthy manor Heatherstone and Wooder manor (now a holiday centre) to Widecombe. This was a distance of circa 7 miles.

My final walk was a stride around Haytor Vale and Ilsington which was circa 2 miles and less challenging.

I visited a total of 7 moorland churches and two small chapels at Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and they are quite a way apart by foot.
