Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Cancer has been a big part of my life. My sister was born with tumours and has numerous scars where they were removed. I've had a mole removed to save me from cancer. My Mother-in-Law has had bowel cancer and has had four operations so far, three on her liver. She may still require chemotherapy as it appears the cancer has spread to her lungs. I have already said on national radio that I love her very much! A close personal friend has survived breast cancer.
Until recently I was working for Cancer Research UK and I hope to be able to work for them again. The area I was working in was mathematical analysis of the effectiveness of treatment, in other words analysing DNA and seeing which treatments have the best chance of success given a particular gene. Research into DNA led to the identification of the BRCA2 gene (which is laid out on a cycle path close to the Cambridge Research Institute. I used to run along this as part of my training).
I have just found out that a very good friend now has to have further chemotherapy for the recurrence of an ovarian carcinoma. Were it not for this friend I might not have married my wife Helen they gave me huge support.
My target is high but the costs of research are substantial.
