Story
'There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women' - Kofi Annan
On the 24th November, GVI Cape Town will be running, rowing and cycling 127km from Gordon’s Bay to Cape Town and back without even leaving base.
This project is committed to supporting aspiring female
small-business in the informal settlements of Nomzamo and Zola outside of Cape Town.
We will assist the women we work with to form co-ops and bring their
business ideas to life and break the cycle of poverty.
Some of the women's' ideas include baking, catering, sewing,
beading, hairdressing, and gardening to sell local produce. Your donations will be used to fund the purchase of goods and services that the entrepreneurs need to get their businesses off the ground.
We need to raise funds so that we can purchase ovens,
fabrics, seeds, and beads as well as hire local teachers and instructors to teach the women how to produce the products.
The following donations would buy:
£3 - 60DM of gardening soil
£4 - 900 onion seeds
£6 - supplies electricity to run 1 oven for 1 month
£6 - 2-hour sewing lesson
£6 - 1 muffin tray and baking paper
£6 - 1 set of ingredients to produce the first batch of
baking
£12 - 1 Spade/Shovel for gardening
£116 - 1 sewing machine
£300 - 1 oven
By giving the women the opportunity to break the cycle of
poverty and we are further assisting the community.
The women will be required to repay their loan interest-free
once they have started to make a profit. These funds will then be re-invested into the community and continue to make a difference for women, families and the informal settlements of Nomzamo and Zola.
