Story
Nyota Ing'arayo Primary School (formerly Precious Vision Care Centre) was founded in 2007 to provide valuable education to vulnerable children in the Shauriyako area of Mombasa. The school began by teaching 60 students of various ages and abilities, and continues to grow, employing more teachers and enrolling more students from the surrounding community.
Today, Nyota Ing'arayo Primary School provides quality education to over 235 students from Kindergarten to Standard 8. Teaching is conducted in conjunction with the Kenyan Curriculum and offers all students the opportunity to sit the Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education exams upon completing Standard 8. Thanks to outside donations, a feeding programme has been in place since 2010, bringing much needed food and nutrition to these underprivileged children.
The mission statement for Nyota Ing'arayo is to become a self-sufficient, independent school, continuing to provide quality education to students for many years to come.
In order to achieve and maintain this, we need your help with the following areas:
• Child Sponsorship - families are asked to pay a small fee to the school. For many families, however, financial restraints make this impossible, and thus the school does not receive as much income as it needs to meet running costs. By donating money towards the sponsorship of a child, you will not only be paying for a child's education, but also helping the school to meet its day to days costs.
• Teachers' Wages - the teachers of Nyota Ing'arayo are paid a small wage, most of which has come in through the school fees. However, if families are unable to pay the school fees then the school struggles to pay the teachers. In the paradigm of primary education, teachers are the most vital ingredient, and a donation from you would ensure their presence and support.
• Feeding Programme - the students at Nyota Ing'arayo are given two meals daily; generally a porridge for breakfast, and a lunch of rice or beans. This programme has been in place since 2010. All food is bought locally in the village, putting more much-needed money into this struggling community. £200 feeds the entire school of 235 students, and 14 staff for an entire week - less than 25p per student per day.
