Story
Who are we?
Global Vision International (GVI) are a volunteer organisation delivering support and services to international charities, non-profits and governmental agencies, through the supply of funding, capacity building, resources and knowledge and equipment.
GVI run volunteer programmes in 13 countries across the world including South Africa, Seychelles, and Thailand encouraging sustainable development.
Our base in Cape Town is situated in Gordons Bay (about 45 minutes south-east of Cape Town city centre) where we have partnerships with community centres, schools and creches with close by townships such as Nomzamo. Here we work in various sectors including child care, women’s empowerment, tutoring and sports.
Our volunteers work closely with community members of all ages where relationships are built and developed with educational support as its foundation.
Our aim
Currently Cape Town is experiencing a prolonged drought due to insufficient rainfall during the winter seasons of 2015, 2016 and 2017. Additionally, Cape Town’s growing population and economy has inevitable led to an increased demand on water which has provided further strain to the water supplies.
Cape Town’s water supply is provided by 14 dams and is mainly supported by 5: the Theewaterskloof, Voëlvlei, Berg River, Wemmershoek and the Steenbras Upper and Lower dams. Cape Town has become largely reliant on wet winter months to fill their dams. On 1st May 2018 the dams were 20.3% of their total capacity, dangerously close to what has been coined Day Zero. Day Zero is the day in which the total capacity of dams falls to 13.5% or below meaning that it will be mandatory for city officials to cut off normal water supply to 75% of homes in Cape Town.
Consequently, drought relief is a necessity.
Our childcare programme works in five different creches in the townships Nomzamo, Lwandle and Zola. In the current climate, one of our partnership creches in Nomzamo is in vital need of a water tank to reduce your municipal water consumption as well as allowing water harvesting.
Therefore, we are looking towards raising £800 to fund the water tank, piping and its fitting with any additional money raised going towards the maintenance and continuation of drought relief with our partnerships within the townships.
Our Project
Our project is two-fold. To raise these funds, we are organising a community clean up of three locations on the dates of 20th, 21st and 22nd of November. The selected areas are the creche where the water tank will be located, the sports field of the local primary school we are in partnership with, and a park nearby Nomzamo Community
Centre.
Our goal is to remove approximately 150kg of rubbish from the township.
Within the townships rubbish accumulates quickly within the streets
creating a dangerous and unsanitary environment. This ensues for a multitude of reasons including overcrowding, weather conditions (e.g. extreme wind) and insufficient waste disposal. We hope that setting an
example and by getting bystanders involved in the clean up will encourage the community to continue.
