For 35 years, the YMCA Community Action Project (YCAP) in Nashville has been helping at-risk students claim a brighter future by offering safe spaces with caring adults to provide academic, emotional, and spiritual support. Programs include literacy, after-school enrichment, and preparation for college and careers.
Over the last five years, Rafael and I have been involved in a variety of ways: helping students with college applications; mentoring; delivering food and school supplies during COVID (with Rafa as well!); and serving on the board. One of the students we've known longest just graduated from college--the first person in her family to do so! Her sister will graduate next spring. Both are remarkable young women with bright futures ahead of them, thanks to the support of their family and YCAP.
Currently, YCAP works with 1000 underserved K-12 students from over 100 schools and community sites at no charge, focusing on the greatest perceived needs by age group.
Despite a March 2020 tornado destroying three of its buildings and several vehicles, YCAP has found ways to continue making a difference in students lives.
Please consider investing in the future of a student today by donating to our 2020 YCAP Champions Campaign. Thank you for your support!!!
