Story
All of us at West Hatch Wildlife Centre would like to say thank you for the generosity of everyone who has kindly donated to our Guillemot Appeal this year.
Thankfully, the intense period from January to May, when we admitted hundreds of oiled seabirds, came to an end with the final bird releases in early June.
During the incident most of the birds we saw were Guillemots from the English Channel, all had been contaminated by Polyisobutene or PIB. But while many of the birds brought to us were lucky enough to survive their ordeal thousands of seabirds perished in the spill.
Such incidents put an enormous strain on our resources, on our staff and on our volunteers. Dealing with such a large number of contaminated birds becomes a salvage operation for those birds we can help and hopefully release back where they came from.
Only with the support of those who give generously to this cause can we continue with the important work we are trained to do.
