Story
As Gandhi so eloquently stated, "it is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold or silver". Whilst it is often hard in our consumer-driven day-to-day lives to remember this wisdom, it only takes a nasty cold or sports injury to remind us of how fundamental good health is to our well-being.
Those that know me will already know how passionate I am about tackling the world's most pressing problems and contributing to a more equitable, just and sustainable society. Health equity is a key part of this and, ever since my first eye-opening visit to Zambia in 2012, I have been simultaneously saddened by the dramatic fragility of health systems in lower-income countries, and yet at the same time inspired by the resilience, drive, optimism and togetherness such communities often exude. Communities that deserve better.
I therefore feel incredibly privileged and lucky to be taking part in a challenge that will help to raise money to support Save the Children's work supporting mothers and their new-born babies, strengthening health systems and reducing child mortality, in so doing enabling a brighter future for those that so deserve it.
The challenge? Originally I intended to trek over 100km in the highlands of Northern Vietnam. Due to COVID's impact on travel I will now be combining the English 3000s and Welsh 3000s - hiking 100km whilst climbing all peaks over 3000ft in England and Wales over the course of a week. Who needs knees anyway, hey?!
My personal commitment is to raise £4,500 and every penny raised will be matched by GSK and go directly to Save The Children (all my travel expenses are covered separately so 100% of your donations go directly to Save The Children).
My challenge starts now through training and fundraising. Thank you SO much for your support - any amount you are able to donate is sincerely appreciated.
Carly :)
