Story
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page for Behcets.
Starting the 18th July, I will be cycling a total distance of 226 miles in support of Behcets UK, the equivalent distance between the three Centres of Excellence for Behcets disease in London, Birmingham and Liverpool. The deadline is to cover the distance in 13 weeks - I think I can do better then that, so will be targeting three weeks!
Behcets is a rare autoimmune, autoinflammatory, vasculitic condition affecting around 2000 people across the UK. Behcets causes widespread inflammation in the body and attacks all systems and organs. It is very difficult to diagnose and can be very difficult to treat, usually involving multiple medications to control inflammation and reduce symptoms.
There are three Centres of Excellence for the treatment of Behcets in the UK. These Centres are vital in: reducing the time to diagnose the disease; funding and promoting life-altering treatments; undertaking important studies into future treatments; and recognising the need for a multi-professional team approach to the disease. At the moment, the Centres are only set up in England. Behcets UK and the health care professionals at the Centres are campaigning for Centres or multi-disciplinary clinics to be introduced to the devolved nations. By raising awareness of Behcets Disease more people will understand the need for patients with this disease to receive specialist care.
By donating to Behcets UK, you are supporting a small charity with a big heart, supporting patients and their families through their Behcets journey. The charity is fully reliant on public fundraising to continue its incredible work, especially important at a time that’s difficult for all of us, and for small charities in particular.
Any amount you can give will be very much appreciated. Thank you.
