Story

Sincere thanks to all who have contributed so generous ly to this project, which preserves and celebrates the heritage of ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) and its intrepid pilots (men as well as women) from over 25 countries around the globe.  You are invited to come and discover their story of courage, skill and sacrifice - and to step into their shoes and fly our fabulous Spitfire simulator.

We have now raised over £150,000 - many thanks to all donors, especially the Heritage Lottery Fund, BAE Systems, Biffaward and the Spitfire Society which  sponsored the Spitfire Simulator through the Leonard Stillwell Bequest Fund.

There are ongoing costs for the maintenance and expansion of the exhibition and archive, and we would be delighted if you could a donation to honour the memory of the intrepid people of ATA.  Many thanks.

At Grandma Flew Spitfires  the unique heritage of ATA is  recorded, preserved and celebrated as an integral part of Maidenhead Heritage Centre.  Grandma Flew Spitfires was opened in October 2012 by Prince Michael of Kent and has become a centre of excellence for ATA research,  attracting visitors from all over the world, and enthusing the younger generation about all things aeronautical.

There are 10 ATA photos for you to look at on this page and hundreds more in our archives, together with uniforms, flying equipment and over 60 logbooks of ATA aircrew.

All the funds raised through this justgiving page will support Grandma Flew Spitfires and the work done at Maidenhead Heritage Centre to spread the word about ATA.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure, and very useful if you live outside the UK in one of the 25 countries from which the intrepid people of ATA came.  All you need is your credit card and you're away.  Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - and it saves time and cuts costs for Grandma Flew Spitfires and Maidenhead Heritage Centre.
