Story
Firstly, me.... Ok so I think those of you that know me well know I am slightly insane and a little bit spontaneous. This year is no different in terms of setting my self goals. In fact, I may be getting worse with age! In 2012, this little (well getting little) lady has decided to keep her on the straight and narrow I shall run the Women's 10k in May (photos to follow shorty after event) AND the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon! My first half!!! So far I have lost a total of over 5st in just over a year and aiming to get to goal (another 2.5st to go) by the half aided by training! Eekkk...wish me luck!!!!
Running (or the very basic walk/run I have built upon has done wonders no end. It has helped me grow in confidence and improves my happiness every day - I recommend it to anyone!!!
So why have I chosen Diabetes UK?? Well, my grandad, George Brown! I decided a few weeks back to run because the outlook of my Grandad's health was not great. He was taken into hospital to have his fourth tow removed due to complications of his Diabetes. We were told after him contracting Pneumonia that things didn't look great and that's when I decided that my charity this year would be Diabetes UK! My heart broke into a million peices when I thought I would lose him so soon. He's the kindest man I know and is very dear to me. Whatever I write will never do him any justice at all and part of me is still sad from hearing him when he was at his worst health wise. Throughout his life he has obviously had to deal with diabetes like millions of others in the UK. 2.5million others infact!
Diabetes is can effect anyone. Most people that have it don't even know they have diabetes and every 3 minutes someone in the UK will learn they have it. Pretty scary! Diabetes is serious - if left untreated it can lead to heart disease, stroke, amputation and other life threatening complications. It is also the leading cause of blindness in people of working age. By making changes to our lifestyle by eating healthy, maintaining a healthy weight and leading an active lifestyle our chances of developing diabetes is greatly reduced.
Diabetes UK is the charity for people with diabetes, their family, friend and carers. Their mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and to work towards a future without diabetes.
Diabetes UK is one of the largest funders of diabetes research in the UK - aiming to spend around £8m a year on developing better treatment, preventing diabetes and finding a cure. They stand up for the interests of people with diabetes by campaigning for better standards of care and provide practicle support and information to better manage their diabetes. Please, if you get a chance, visit their website. It contains all sorts of information and also tells you about the 2 types of diabetes there is. It can be found at www.diabetes.org.uk
