Dumelang! (Yes, I'm learning!)

 

If you're reading this, then you probably already know, but this summer I'm going to be flying to Thohoyandou in Limpopo province in South Africa to teach maths in a school for 4 weeks. This is an amazing opportunity that I have been lucky enough to be able to partake in as part of the "Warwick In Africa" scheme (let Lenny Henry enlighten you further at http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/alumni/giving/priority/responsibility/warwickinafrica)

 

There are around 50 or so of us flying out to some of the poorest parts of Africa on July 23rd, and I will be in a team of six in Limpopo trying to make a small difference to the lives of the children out there. I am aiming to raise as much money as possible before going out there so that we can invest in resources to leave in Africa when we go, as well as allowing this incredible project to continue next year. So in order to raise money, I'm going to be participating in.......The 3 Peaks Challenge!

 

For those of you not familiar with this, the aim is simple. Climb Ben Nevis (1344m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Mount Snowdon (1085m), the three highest mountains in the UK. In under 24 hours. Madness, yes. But apparently, it's doable and so we are going to do it!

 

Around 50 other slightly insane people will be joining me in this venture on the weekend of the 9-10th July, where we will start climbing Ben Nevis around 5pm Saturday evening, climb Scafell Pike in the dark and then triumphantly finish off with Mount Snowdon on Sunday afternoon. And should I survive this, I will of course be back in school, teaching on Monday morning (Hm, what have I let myself in for....)

 

Currently my training schedule consists of walking from my house to my car every day, which is often found all the way on the next road due to lack of parking places on my street. I will of course most probably be increasing the intensitiy of my training before the event, otherwise I am unlikely to make it to Africa at all...

 

I'm going to stop rambling now. Basically, any money that you would be generous enough to donate would all go directly to helping children in Africa to have a better education. The kind of children that you'd be helping live in overcrowded huts, may have lost members of their family to HIV/AIDS and will most likely have to walk miles every day to get to school. Any donation, however small, would be awesome, and would go some way to making a real difference to these people.
