Iceland Challenge 2011 · 22 August 2011
Graham went off to Iceland for 2 weeks on a 72 yacht with 11 other fundraisers and a professional crew. The aims were to get ocean sailng experience we wouldn't have the courage to do on our own and raise money for Ocean Youth Trust Scotand- an organisation that takes young, often disadvataged people on sailing trips. This allows these young people to develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and others and to have a good time too.
We left Inverness on 22nd August, and sailed non-stop to Iceland, 600 miles away, through gales for the last 36 hours. Most of the crew were seasick and being thrown around by waves higher than the boat in the middle of the night was a new experience. We stopped in Djupivogur on the East coast of Iceland to recover for a couple of days then returned via the Faroe islands. There were more gales on ther way from the Faroes to Stornoway We then headed back to Ullapool, arriving 3rd September.
The minimum sponsorship for this trip is £2950 which I have paid myself, so you are not being asked to contribute to my holiday!. The whole of any additional sponsorship will benefit OYTS which needs the money to keep taking youngsters sailing.
