...in April 2010 I learned I had a rare form of leukaemia. I was fortunate that the initial chemotherapy treatment was effective and I was soon in remission. In October 2010 I underwent a stem cell transplant. My brother, David, was an excellent match and flew back from the States to make the donation. The transplant has been a success and now I am fighting fit again.
I want to thank my brother, and all of the consultants, doctors and nursing teams at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading who carried out the initial treatment, and at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford who carried out the stem cell transplant, for their skill, expertise and care to bring about my recovery.
I have been participating in numerous clinical trials and research programmes during and after the treatment, all of which need funding.
That is why I have decided to walk the Pennine Way, as a gesture of thanks, as personal proof of my recovery, and as a way to raise money for the important research which makes groundbreaking and lifesaving treatments available to us.
You never know when you might benefit from the work that's being done - I hardly had a day's illness in my life up to the point of my diagnosis. So please give generously to such a worthwhile cause.
