This Summer I plan to swim the English Channel – just a dream until last Summer when, after we lost my sister-in-law Beth to cancer, I decided to realize this dream in Beth’s memory and at the same time raise money for cancer research.

They say that swimming the Channel is a tougher challenge than climbing Everest. Indeed, less than 1,000 people have completed the 21-mile(32km) crossing, whereas over 3000 have conquered the world's tallest mountain. Only one in ten people who train for the Channel swim actually complete it.

As if the swim itself is not a big enough slog, the English Channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with over 600 tankers and 200 ferries crossing it every day. Other problems include sewage, debris, jellyfish, treacherous currents and tides. Also, as part of the challenge, you are not allowed to wear anything that aids buoyancy or warmth - thankfully this does not prevent me from lathering myself in goose fat which I of course intend to do slavishly.

I aim to complete this epic challenge in the week beginning 14th August.My chosen international charity The Institute of Cancer Research, is Europe’s most influential cancer research centre. Since I am self funding my swim, all monies donated will go to this Charity.  Anything no matter how small is gladly welcomed.
