Story
In two weeks, I’ll be running the London Marathon in
support of the Friends of Moorfields.
They are the organisation that looks after the volunteers at
Moorfields, where I’ve been working for the past three years. They’re entirely funded through charitable donations.
They’re vital to our work, particularly in reassuring and
helping our patients, many of whom are older and find it difficult to make it to their sight-saving clinics.
Young volunteers are helping overcome digital exclusion by
showing people how to use technology – for example, home vision monitoring tests that save them a trip to hospital, and digital appointment letters.
Friends even hold people’s hands during difficult operations
on their eyes, during which they need to be conscious. With this support, 82% of patients feel at ease through their treatment; without this, it’, only 34%.
This is quite a challenge for me. My last marathon was 20
years ago, my longest training run is 24km and the event is a month away.
Please help me raise as much as possible in the time
available!
Gordon
Update, 20/9: I have now done a 31km run, all set to go on 1 Oct!
Final update, 3/10: Some of you may know the behind the scenes dramas with my marathon place. In the end, I had to run it virtually, and yesterday I completed it in 3hr 43 min, quicker than the two I did 20 years ago. Thank you for your generosity, and, to Kim, my friends from Moorfields and from City Gates church, thank you for your support and encouragement through the training and build-up.
I'll be leaving this page live in case anyone has any final donations or would like to share it with their friends and networks
