Story
Once again we will be raising much needed monies for the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Pediatric Oncology team! Over the past 4 years we have played more than 520 holes and raised over $120,000 for Dr. Jean Tersak and her fantastic team!
This June 14th, Bruce Berman, Brad Aurila, Pat Bostick and Rick Platt will be teeing it up at Chartiers Country Club and playing another 100+ holes and raising money for this great cause. In addition to Chartiers, The Tri-State PGA, in support of their "PGA Reach" initiative will also be participating as several other clubs have committed to supporting these efforts through have a group at their course or donating to the Chartiers group.
As in the past all monies raised will support critical pediatric cancer research projects focused on finding better treatment pathways, improving survival rates as well as to study the long term impacts the treatments have.
Two current projects focused on pediatric cancer survivors include the measurement of benefits of physical activity on mental and physical wellness for survivors, as well as embarking on a multi-site study to track the most efficient and accurate methods of transferring survivors’ medical records as they move onto college or new towns for employment as young professionals.
While survival rates for pediatric cancer have greatly improved, we need to better understand the long-term impacts both the disease and treatments that save them have on these patients. Successful courses of treatment mean that there are more pediatric cancer survivors than ever before.
Dr. Tersak, Director of UPMC Children’s Hospital Survivorship Clinic, states it best:
“With so many survivors, we now have the opportunity, not to mention the obligation, to be sure we help childhood cancer survivors to live the healthiest, fullest lives possible as cancer survivors.”
