Story
I'm lucky to have worked for The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) since 2011. Each year the service rescues hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year throughout the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. Their doctor-led critical care teams deliver life-saving treatments at the scene of the incident whether that is on a fell top, a roadside or in a city centre. The charity responded to 1,640 call outs last year and all of us that work for the charity have first hand experience of the difference the service makes to hundreds of patients and their families each year across the region.
COVID-19 has hit the charity sector hard and at present revenue from fundraising is well below previous levels. My wife Angela (events officer at GNAAS) has told me I need to get out there and go BIG! I'll be doing 2 of the biggest bike rides of my life (101 miles then 150 miles) and completing a half marathon on the day of the Great North Run ... all the events will replicate fundraising events that have been cancelled due to COVID-19 and although I'll be joined by some colleagues and supporters we will be undertaking the events in a responsible manor and in-line with government guidance on social distancing and infection control measures.
I'm pushing myself for a great cause (but at the back of my mind I'll always know if I don't go big I can't go home!!!)
