Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our Just Giving page for the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Fund at the Great North Children's Hospital (GNCH) in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The specialist Paediatric Infectious Diseases Team at the GNCH provide care for children with complex infections, such as brain abscesses, meningitis and sepsis. Our dedicated local charitable fund is the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Fund (administered by Newcastle Hospitals NHS Charity), which helps support our research to improve care for children with severe infections.
Fever is one of the most common reasons we see children brought into our hospital. Thankfully the majority of children will simply have a viral infection which can be easily treated to bring their temperature down. However, we know from intelligence already gathered that 1 out of every 100 children we see will have a bacterial infection like sepsis which, if not treated immediately, can become fatal.
Recognising these patients with potentially severe infection in an early stage, when treatment is straightforward, can be challenging. Improving this early
recognition is very important to ensure timely and correct treatment in those children who need it, while at the same time avoiding unnecessary treatment and risk of anti-microbial resistance for others.
With your generosity, our charitable fund can complement NHS resources and external funding to support and hire research staff, such as nurses and fellows, who help deliver the research in this specific area. We can also provide assistance for nursing staff to attend conferences locally and nationally to gain and share knowledge and we can help fund the development of new guidelines, both in the GNCH and beyond.
