Story
During these crazy times I decided to set myself a challenge. As the RNLI's South East Regional Lifesaving Manager
I lead an incredible team of staff and volunteers in Lifesaving, Fundraising, Engagement, Engineering and Water Safety. As a team,
as ‘One Crew’, we all work and support the RNLI for the same reason to Save Lives at Sea. We collectively look after the river and waters from Teddington in West London to Southend-on-Sea, and on round to Swanage in Dorset.
So whilst cooped up in the house and unable to visit the
teams personally, I thought it would be interesting to ‘virtually cycle’ to
every one of the Lifeboat stations in the South East region, a total of around 480 miles and 31 stations. To do this I would use training rollers and an indoor turbo trainer. I hope that if the situation changes, I might be able to do the last 3 or 4 stations for real!
So, I started my journey on the 3rd April at Teddington lifeboat station and headed down the Thames out towards to Southend-on-Sea. Since then I have been slowly making my way around the coast virtually stopping at each station for a virtual tea and biscuit!
I am currently, virtually at Eastbourne Lifeboat station having
covered 257 miles. It is at this point I thought I would start a just giving page to see if I could raise £480 for the RNLI, a pound for each mile cycled.
I fully understand that the current situation means that this could be difficult and that the NHS is doing an incredible and as such needs
our support, but as a charity continuing to do its best to save lives at sea I thought it would be worth an ask.
Too many people are still drowning. More than ever we need the RNLI’s help. As a charity, the RNLI depends on our donations so it can go on saving lives and keeping us and our loved ones safe. RNLI lifesavers are our lifeline. They’re the lifeboat crews who provide 24-hour search and rescue right around the UK and Ireland. The lifeguards keeping watch on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands. And the RNLI safety teams and educators working tirelessly to stop people getting into trouble in the first place.Thank you.
