Story
On World Suicide Prevention Day this September, Amy, Fern, Harriet, and Nelson will be taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge – yomping a total ascent of 1,532m, covering 24 miles within 12 hours.
As gals who normally spend our time together in city bars, we are going to switch things up and spend our summer training and raising money to support the men we love. 3 out of 4 suicides in the UK are by men, so this is for our brothers, mates, lovers, colleagues and fathers – all guys we love sharing our lives with. We are hoping to raise at least £1 for each metre we will have to climb so read more about our personal stories below and please give generously.
Amy’s story: My son was born during the pandemic and, reading about the mental health challenges our young men are facing, I would love to see changes to men’s health now that will make his outlook brighter. That, paired with a husband working in an emergency response team I too often hear the realities of male suicide and the impact it has on men’s families and first responders. I have never done a sponsored challenge before, so am dreading the training but look forward to spending time with some great friends, feeling grateful to have these ladies to lean on when times are tough (which I imagine will be about 5 miles in)
Nelson's story: I love all people, especially men who often can throw a ball a long way and are generous with bacon treats. I also love walking so this has worked out well for me. I will be chief motivation officer so please donate to keep the girls spirits up and make my job easier.
Fern’s story: While I’m looking forward to the challenge (I say that now, ask me in a couple of months how it’s going and you may have to duck) this is not about improving my physical health, it’s about improving men’s mental health and that will only come about with timely interventions, and they cost money. That’s where you come in. You can walk with us in spirit just by making a donation. No dirtying of trainers necessary.
No one expects suicide to cast a shadow over their friends or family. No one expects to end up with an empty chair at family gatherings. Help us to try and make a difference.
Harriet’s story: The only Yorkshire lass in the group, here for all the men (and these great ladies) in raising awareness to address the very real and ongoing mental health challenges faced in the UK. 24 miles is a lot of hiking, please send help.
