The Macular Society is the only charity determined to beat the fear and isolation of macular disease with world class research, and the best advice and support. Medical research will lead us to the cure we need to beat macular disease for the next generation.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Why am I doing this?

I am blessed to have several passions in my life; one of them is dancing and another major one is working for the Macular Society: https://www.macularsociety.org.

It wasn't until I started working for the Society that I learnt that macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, with around 300 people diagnosed every day. It can affect people of any age — even children.

I've learnt how cruel and isolating it is. It steals your sight, your confidence, your independence, and your ability to do the things you love. It takes your dreams and plans for the future away from you.

And yet, despite the devastating impact of macular disease, little is known about its causes and there is still no cure. Today, more and more people are being diagnosed with macular disease. In fact, the number of people living with the condition is set to double in the next 20 years. It is set to be the next major public health crisis — far more people with macular disease than dementia.

But research into macular disease is drastically underfunded and underprioritised. So, I've decided to join the fight to help Beat Macular Disease with this dance step challenge. So that together we can find a treatment that stops it in its tracks, and eradicates it forever.

The challenge

To complete 100,000 dance steps between now (13 Oct) and the last week before Christmas.

Enabling me to do this is all thanks to Jackie Edmett's FitStep classes: https://www.yourdayyourdance.co.uk/fitsteps. I’ve known Jackie for several years and not only is she a great dance teacher, she’s also a real inspiration having undertaken many charity fundraisers herself. Thank you Jackie!

Jackie's classes are very safe and follow strict social distancing measures. Should we go back into lockdown during my challenge I will take online classes.
