Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Cancer is a major problem in India with 80% of all patients first presenting in the terminal stages of their disease when it is too late for curative treatment . What forces them to seek treatment is the insufferable, unrelenting pain.
Cancer Relief India (CRI)has been active in India since 1990.Much has been achieved during that time in terms of availability of morphine, education of health personnel in pain relief and palliative care and payment of staff salaries in order to deliver care. But there is still much more to be done .
CRI has been asked to pay for a nurse's salary for one year to deliver palliative care and to teach in the nursing schools and colleges in South Kerala. £10 per day-approx £1.25 per hour will pay for the nurse's salary.
Professor Rajgopal-a former student of Gilly's has been called the "Father of Palliative Care" in India. Earlier this year Gilly and her friend and colleague,Dr Lindsay Crack,a consultant in Palliative Medicine were invited to teach with Professor Rajgopal.
Doctors and Nurses from India and Sri Lanka attended the course.
Cancer Relief India is also supporting palliative care programmes in Delhi,Calcutta and West Bengal.
