Story
Thank you for visiting my page.
When I set myself this challenge, it was never supposed to be "in memory of." It was to raise money and awareness for Kidney Cancer Scotland who were providing wonderful support to my beloved aunty Mandy during her long battle with Kidney Cancer. She sadly passed away last May much sooner than expected. It has left the biggest void in my life that can never be repaired.
Having been rescheduled a few times due to covid, on 22nd Jan 2022, I will be taking part in the Fan Dance which is an event to replicate one of the early parts of selection to the UK Special Forces. It is 24km speed march through the Brecon Beacons in Wales carrying 35lbs. This is through an events company called The SF Experience but I have chosen to raise money for Kidney Cancer Scotland. They are a small charity and Kidney cancer is one of the more rare cancers so needs shouting about a bit more. No one should die in their early fifties.
Mandy was by her own admission the least active and adventurous person ever so this event isn't a reflection of her but of me. She told me I was a "mad bastard" for doing it but I know how immensely proud she was. I only hope I can do her proud on the day.
The challenge itself, whilst I am a fairly experienced hiker, I have never attempted to carry that much weight so that is going to be a real test. Throw in the weather in January as well. I really hate being cold and have terrible circulation in my hands and feet so that is bound to get to me. Wish me luck. Not quite sure at this stage how I am going to get through it.
If you are able to donate anything at all, no matter how small, I will be incredibly grateful. Much Love G x
