Story
As the Country is now in a second national lockdown, The Captain Tom Foundation has launched Walk with Captain Tom. Its mission is to get as many people as possible walking and talking, spreading hope and easing loneliness. I decided to dedicate my fundraising to my father in law who died earlier this year (fortunately before the pandemic) at the ripe old age of 91. He loved to walk and Angie, his wife, who unfortunately died a few years earlier, used to ensure that he went out for a walk every day. As he got older, he walked with some walking sticks and the last couple of years, when he was in the care home, suffering with dementia, he walked with a frame. He was very lonely in the care home, when Angie died, despite the great care of the staff and a steady stream of visitors. The highlight of the day was going for a walk outside, initially on his own and then with one of us later on. He lived for those walks and it kept him going. I love walking and as I'm currently working from home, decided it would be a great way to keep fit, get some fresh air and raise money for such a worthwhile cause. It's also lovely to have some company on the walks from time to time from family and friends. I'm always bumping (not literally) into people I know in my lovely home town of Bewdley and spreading a bit of cheer along the way. The coronavirus pandemic continues to cause so much uncertainty and strain, particularly for those facing loneliness, bereavement and mental health issues, and I want to help as much as I can.
