Story
In 2020, my friend Louise and her family went through the worst possible time.
Their son Fred was diagnosed in 2019 with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. He was treated at Birmingham Children's Hospital and Great Ormond Street. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia has a relatively high recovery rate, but this was not so in Fred's case.
After chemotherapy was unsuccessful, a new form of treatment was attempted, which involved taking Fred's own cells, developing them to fight the cancer and returning them to his body.
The treatment did not work and Fred died on 3rd May 2020, during the first Covid-19 lockdown. His parents were allowed to be with him, but his younger brother was not allowed to see him due to Covid restrictions.
CCLG were and are a huge support to the Bennett family. Since Fred's death, many people have taken on various challenges in Fred's memory. It will be an honour to pull on a CCLG vest and run my heart out for them on 3rd October 2021.
