Story
If you imagine one of the least sensible things you could do, riding 3,000km through India on a 7 horsepower glorified lawnmower is probably it. Despite this, we (Will, Daniel and Mitch) are preparing to take on The Rickshaw Run this August. We’ll be competing as team Get it India in the race from Cochin to Jaisalmer, fundraising for charity and trying not to get picked up by rogue elephants in the process.
Before we get to the India, we'll be doing a couple of other events to fundraise. First up was The NSW Triathlon series. Will and Mitchell competed in the sprint Triathlon, and Daniel competed with our friend Emma in the team triathlon. Covering a 750m swim, 20km ride and a 5km run, the triathlon didn't compare to what we’re about to experience in India, but it didn't hurt in preparing us for running from elephants or dodging cows on the road!
As part of the challenge, the trio will be fundraising the Rickshaw Run’s partner charity, Cool Earth which works with indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction.
How can your donation help?
$95 – saves an acre of rainforest
$240 – helps keep a child in school for a year
$480 – provides emergency evacuation to hospital & treatment
$965 – provides funding for a first aid post
Started just over 10 years ago by English group, The Adventurists, the Rickshaw Run is not designed to be a holiday. There’s no set route, no back-up and no way of knowing if you're going to make it. Around 85 teams from all over the world will take part and how many will finish is anyone’s guess.
“All I wanted was a two week holiday by the beach. Now I get to spend my annual leave in monsoonal India driving these two idiots around for eight hours a day. But I’m sure it’ll be a great experience.” - Mitchell.
