Story
Despite the ageing bones, dodgy weather, peat bog and marshmallow lungs, I succeeded with the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge- coming in a full 30 mins before the 12 hour maximum time allowed to trek the 26 miles and climb the 3 highest peaks in Yorkshire - Whernside (736m), Ingleborough (723m), and Pen-y-ghent (694m). I am now the proud owner of a membership certificate for the Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club as issued by the Pen-y-ghent Cafe (I love that) -as well as a pint sized tea mug of course! The first 2 peaks were hard but great, (luckily I wasn't the guy who stepped into the peat bog up to his waist or another who fell in head first) and then, with no time to stop for the last 8 miles, the heavens opened and the mist came down as I faced the near vertical climb to the third peak. Enjoyment came second to sheer determination to stare at my sodden boots, wheeze on and finish ahead of the deadline. I've not attempted anything so hard in one day as this and was totally clacked but relieved to be in one piece as I fell asleep over my celebratory pint of Black Sheep!
I'm raising money for two charities-Alzheimers Research (Capgemini Charity of the Year and one that needs no introduction for its brilliant work on this debilitating disease that affects so many) and Marjorie McClure Specialist School (where they do amazing things for children with severe mental and physical challenges and where my wife Beverly taught for many years and from where she recently retired)
I know times are tough but please dig deep and donate something via this link – a few photos included.
Thank you so much
Gerry
