Story

Those of you who know me, know that I don’t generally do exercise and I definitely do not run! Well, let me tell you – I’ve changed!!

I started running, well walking really, in May of last year and have gradually been building up my fitness. Yes, there’s been times I have wanted to give it up and give into my manipulative mind which is constantly telling me to “go home” or “take this short cut” or “do a bit of walking”. I can’t say I enjoy running but enjoy the end of a run the second I stop, it’s bliss!!!

My friend Angela (who runs lots and far!) has been an inspiration and tremendous source of support and advice. She’s been encouraging me to take part in a sponsored event, so I said I would only do it for charity – and only for the Huntington’s Disease Association (www.hda.org.uk).

This cause if very close to my heart. One of my best friends, Andy, who I’ve known since university in 1995, found out that he has Huntington’s at the end of 2006.  Andy’s brother Colin sadly died of ’s last year and his oldest brother John has also been diagnosed with this nasty disease and has been fighting the symptoms for a number of years.

Here’s the science bit: Huntington’s Disease is a hereditary progressive neurological disorder which attacks the central nervous system. The faulty gene that causes ’s damages nerve cells in the brain which leads to physical, mental and emotional problems.

The Huntington’s Disease Association is a voluntary organisation that offers advice, information and support to individuals with this disease as well as their families. Any amount of money, whether it’s a fiver or a tenner, makes a significant difference to what the organisation is able to provide. I would like to support this charity as I know they will do their best to support people like my friend Andy.

In order to raise funds for the ’s Association, I will be putting myself through the agony of a 5k race during which I will have to defeat my manipulative mind. The race is on Sunday, 7th June.

Thank you for all your support and giving what you’re able to give. It is MUCH appreciated.
