Story
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is an immune-mediated disease of the bile ducts with no medical treatment. PSC is referred to as ‘the last black box in hepatology’ because there is so much we don’t yet understand about this complex condition, despite impressive research progress in the last decade. People with PSC urgently need a treatment that works. Donating to PSC Support means you are helping us fund more ground-breaking research projects. The next one could be the breakthrough that people with PSC have been waiting for. #LetsBeatPSC
I found out I have PSC under the worst circumstances - in 2019 I turned yellow (jaundiced) because my common bile duct was scarred and blocked, and I needed an emergency operation to save my life. Because of PSC, I have a lifetime of regular scans, blood tests and endoscopies in front of me as a best case scenario. Worst cases involve liver transplants or cancers. Recent research has started to offer an explanation for how PSC comes about, but treatment is very limited, and more research is needed on preventing progression. PSC Support funds clinical trials for new drugs and offers a fantastic support network for people who need it, either when they get diagnosed or as their disease progresses. They've been brilliant, but its all funded by donation - because it's a rare disease, there aren't enough people with PSC to draw in the big bucks. That's where you and your wallet come in.
I've always wanted to walk the Welsh 3000s; the 15(ish, depending on who you ask) Welsh peaks higher than 3000 ft altitude. In June this year, I am going to RUN them - 32+ miles, 4000 m of ascent, as fast as I can (likely 10-12 hours of running!) . Starting on Snowdon's summit at sunrise, the knife-edge arete of Crib Goch is followed by the Glyderau massif and all the sub-peaks on it, with Tryfan's western gully as the quickest way down to Llyn Ogwen. Then, it's the quad-killing Pen Yr Ole Wen back up onto the Carneddau, then a loooong run to the final peak of Foel Fras, where the clock stops, but I don't. A slow and wobbly walk downhill to my final meetup with my support crew (Sarah) and a well-earned cup of coffee.
I have put a lot of hard work and training into preparing for this - it will undoubtedly be the biggest physical challenge I have undertaken to date. I would really appreciate your support in helping me raise funds for PSC Support. Please donate today!
