3 years ago my sister, Imi made it her mission to complete the Ironman, a year later my cousin Hugh made it his mission, so to carry on the Harris tradition, I've now made it mine.. on the 19th of July I will be taking part in the UK Ironman in Bolton!!
An Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride followed by a marathon (26.2 mile run), all completed one after the other. You have 17 hours to complete the whole race but the record currently stands at a little over 8hrs... i'm just hoping to cross the finish line!
With that said...I wouldn't exactly say it was by choice that I signed up. After hearing "So Georgie, when are you going to do the Ironman?" for at least a year, it was only inevitable that I caved!
After signing up in July last year, I've been training ever since. It started off with a few runs and some short cycles but by January I was following a proper training plan consisting of an hours training before and after work. As of now (April) I am training 15 hours a week but by June that will increase to 20 hrs - all while maintaining a 9-5 job!
Like Hugh and Imi, I will be raising money in memory of my Grandmother, for Alzheimer's Society. Our Grandmother, Anne, suffered with Dementia for over 10 years to the point where she didn't even recognise her own family - I can't imagine what it would be like to forget every memory you ever made. Alzheimer's society are able to offer care for those suffering with dementia as well as support for their families. I will therefore be hugely grateful for any amount you are able to donate!
If you are interested in following my journey I will be updating my ironman Facebook page regularly:
