Story
Hi everyone,
For those of you who don’t know I have signed up to run the Cambridge Half Marathon on March 4th next year (2018).
Originally I was going to run for pride and just for self satisfaction. However, I recently went to an information evening with Samaritans and have signed up to become a new volunteer. During my time so far as a Student Nurse I have come into contact with so many people from so many walks of life and it has really helped me understand how to help and educate those in need. Sometimes all it took was for someone to just stop and listen to them.
Samaritans is a volunteer led organisation. As well as supporting people who need emotional support, our volunteers undertake outreach in the community, fundraise, and take on administrative roles, all of which are vital to ensure that the service remains available round the clock, every day of the year. Listeners answer the calls of people 24:7.
We take calls from anyone around the UK and can help people to try and see that better days will come. From just one simple information evening and I’m sure the rest of my training as well I will have learnt so much more about mental health, the organisation and just how to listen.
As a volunteer I am only required to give 3 hours a week of my time. 3 hours.. it really isn’t alot when you think about it. I am a full time Student Paediatric Nurse at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and I know more students could give up three hours a week to a good cause.
