"Endometriosis is a chronic and debilitating disease affecting 1.5 million women in the UK. The condition can drastically impact on the quality of life - physically, mentally, personally and financially." - Endometriosis UK
On average it takes a women with Endometriosis 15 years to be diagnosed
After my personal and fundraising success last year after running the ASICS London 10k and raising £1,000+, I have decided to take on a new challenge and set myself a goal for 2020!
In 2020 I plan to run 12 competitive runs to represent 12 years of suffering, undiagnosed from the symptoms of Endometriosis. My ultimate goal is to be able to run a half-marathon by the end of the year...
For those who do not know I was diagnosed with endometriosis on the 1st December 2018. It came as a surprise to me after almost 12 years of suffering and asking GP's, doctors and specialist to explore this option. Shockingly it is common for women to have to wait as long as 15 years before being diagnosed. I frequently missed multiple days of school as a teenager and more recently days/ weeks from work due to the excessive pain and bleeding which can leave me bed bound on days.
Without suffering from the disorder personally I would not have been aware of the condition. I believe this is a big problem and feel this condition needs to be more widely recognised in public and in the workplace. More people should be aware.
Over a year later from my initial diagnosis I am still none the wiser on my options for the future and if and how I can learn to manage the symptoms I experience as a result of my endometriosis. I am fortunate enough to be under a great specialist now, and hopefully in a far better medical position that I was this time last year when I was planning mt 10k for last July.
One way I can describe endometriosis to people who do not have it or who have not heard of the condition is a tightly wrapped barbed wire like pain squeezing my stomach, hips, back and sides - some days it unbearable.
I have been so fortunate to have the support of Endometriosis UK over the last year, and since running the ASICS British 10k have met so many other women who suffer with Endometriosis. I look forward to meeting so many more over the next year and raising funds together for this incredible charity!
Please support me and Endometriosis UK, any donation however big or small would be greatly appreciated to help me reach my goal.
Stay tuned for updates!
