Story
This October I will be attempting to carry my short little legs 26.2miles across London in the London Marathon.
On 5th October 2014, I lost not only my elder brother but my best friend to a sudden and unexplained heart attack at the youthful age of 21. The day before Matt passed away, he was doing what he loved to do, playing rugby at Cobham Rugby Club surrounded by family and friends. Cobham was the club he had been part of since U5's and having finished University he was now playing for Cobham's senior team.
Matt was a fit, healthy young man who was full of energy and life, but, just like him 12 apparently fit and healthy young adults die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions every week in the UK alone. It is therefore with great pride that I will be running the London Marathon not only in memory of Matt but to raise as much money and awareness as possible for the Charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).
After Matt passed away we were put in touch with CRY as a source of help. Not just for diagnostic testing but also for counselling and support and they were fantastic.
As well as supporting bereaved families, CRY's aim is to prevent sudden cardiac deaths in young adults through awareness, targeted screening and funding research into the condition at the centre of excellence in St George's Hospital Tooting.
Unfortunately, we are still unable to diagnose what caused Matt's heart attack but with your donations we can certainly help CRY reduce the frequency of sudden cardiac deaths in the young by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and by providing screening facilities to help promote and protect the cardiac health of our young. By supporting CRY I know you will save young lives from potentially fatal cardiac conditions.
Matt, I'm sure you will be in stiches (like me) as you watch me struggle across the streets of London but there is no one else I would rather push through the pain for. This one for you bro!
Thanks for taking the time to read this page and for any donations you may be able to give.
