Story
On the 25th September, we (Georgia, Hennie, Josh, Kaiya, Katherine and James) are off to do the Bristol half marathon… it’s a bold move, but a celebration of Georgia’s amazing recovery from sepsis. Alongside this, we’re fundraising for the Sepsis Trust UK, to raise awareness and support a key charity to reduce cases like Georgia’s in the future.
For a bit of background, Georgia suffered seriously from sepsis in September 2021, so raising money for this charity is really important for us all. At the end of freshers week with what we thought was freshers flu, Georgia was admitted to A&E with suspected appendicitis following an off duty GP visit. In hospital, she deteriorated rapidly and was admitted to ICU that evening, then diagnosed with pneumonia which triggered septic shock sending Georgia into a medically induced coma for 17 days with ventilation. Following resuscitation, multiple organ failures and surgery, she was discharged after about a month and carried on her recovery from home. 9 months on, she is training for a half marathon, which will be around the anniversary she was taken ill, and she will no doubt run the Bristol half marathon with ease!!
Unfortunately Georgia’s case is not uncommon, with around 250,000 cases a year in the UK. Delays in diagnoses, like Georgia’s case, quickly increase the severity of each case of sepsis, meaning around 1 in 5 cases of sepsis in the UK are fatal. This is why we are raising sepsis awareness supporting the Sepsis Trust UK for our half marathon. This trust aims to end preventable deaths from sepsis by instigating political change, educating healthcare professionals and raising public awareness. They also provide support for those affected by sepsis and their families.
We will all appreciate your support so much as it’s a close cause to so many of us, and any donations will mean the world. PS, if you’d like to join us in the run, let us know!!!
