Story
On Saturday 4th September 2021, our amazing Husband / Dad, George, finally finished his 12 year battle with a rare form of dementia called PPA (Primary Progressive Aphasia).
Most people are unaware that there are many different forms of dementia, not just Alzheimer's but as that is by far the most common cause of dementia, all forms are frequently used under the umbrella term of 'Alzheimer's'. What George had, was a degeneration of the cells on a different part of the brain. This affected him in different ways- there were no problems with his memory- it affected his ability to communicate and carry out the most basic of everyday tasks.
Dementia is a really cruel disease, and something that nobody has ever recovered from- a truly sobering fact. Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK. Dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing. These are all facts, and facts that affect us all.
Dad worked all of his life as a research scientist, first at Wellcome, and finishing as the Director of Medicinal Chemistry at GlaxoSmithkline, and in his memory we are asking for donations to the Amazing charity, Alzheimer's Research UK. ARUK are at the forefront of research into the causes of Dementia and do some frankly astounding work. Hopefully with enough funding, they will continue to make great strives towards finding a cure to these horrible diseases, and stop other friends and families having to deal with this pain in the future.
It seems fitting that money raised in Dad's memory should go towards research, something that he spent his life working on and was passionate about.
