Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit ourJustGiving page, supporting a Prosthetic Unit in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

We, friends in Year 11 here at Ampleforth, wish to help people without limbs in Bosnia-Herzegovina. We are supporting a Prosthetic Unit set up near Mostar and supporting other work with those suffering poverty.  This is the work of Matthew Procter (W80), who created and now runs this Prosthetic Unit. It is run by a UK charity based in Hampshire called Miracles.

The Miracles Centre for Prosthesis and Care was officially opened on 1 April 2009. The 1992-1995 war caused the loss of an estimated 250,000 lives, displaced nearly half of the pre-war population of 4.4 million people and cost an estimated $100 billion in war damage. As a result of the war, Bosnia-Herzegovina changed from a medium income country to a poor one; it is estimated that over half of its population are poor and suffer serious shortage in all aspects of welfare. The war left a legacy of landmines and it is still one of the seven most land mined countries in the world; an estimated 5,000 people injured by these mines since the war. Given the level of widespread poverty and a health system that is fractured and underfunded many of these victims have gone without any kind of quality prosthetic care or psychological support. Children and young adults are the most vulnerable – the impact of a landmine explosion on their bodies and minds is devastating.

We ask you to help Miracles in its work in the Prosthetic Unit.

We and other students in Year 11 at Ampleforth, representatives (Hats) of the school charity organisation Face-Faw, plan a Croquet Competition at Exhibition, on Saturday 2 June 2012. This will involves a series of croquet matches between teams represented by a parent and a student.

Those entering the Croquet Competition are asked to donate £10 per person (£20 per team of two) to enter the Competition, and to register this on this site - but we really encourage you to donate more if possible.

If you cannot join us, we invite you to support us and Face-Faw - just register [Donate] below and write "non-playing entry". Please help us to support this work and support Matthew Procter.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Ampleforth Abbey Trust/Face-Faw for Miracles and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s effective.
