A few of you will know this and many of you will not, but I myself was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at the age of 18, during my final year of A-Levels. It is not something I particularly like to broadcast or talk about, but it was an incredibly tough time and something I have lived with ever since.
Crohn’s is a debilitating illness and sadly one which has no cure. On the whole I have been fortunate, receiving great care at both The Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and now at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and I am in a position where I am able to take on crazy activities like an Ultra Marathon. However, I was not always in this position and there have been times when I was unable to undertake any kind of physical exercise for months on end, let alone attempt a double marathon.
Sadly there are many people who will be struggling with the impacts of Crohn’s and Colitis as you read this. It is for these people that I am running, not only to try and raise some money for a truly worthwhile cause, but also to hopefully show them that whilst times may be tough now, they can get better again.
Let me be clear, this is a ridiculous challenge for me and one I am genuinely fearful of not being able to complete. Before embarking on training for this event I had only ran 100 miles across 9 months in 2021 and I’ll now need to complete over half of that distance within 13 hours… let that sink in for a second.
To be able to stand a chance of finishing on race day, I will be running all through the winter months, building up miles in my legs and getting used to the pain and suffering that I will no doubt endure on the day.
If you are in a position to donate I would very much appreciate it.
Thanks,
George
