Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In November 2016, out of the blue, I found that I had a large tumour on my left kidney. I was feeling fine but it made itself known. Two months later, in January 2017, I underwent a radical nephrectomy (removal of the whole kidney) at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford. I made an excellent recovery and needed no ongoing therapies, just a scan every six and then twelve months. I've recently received the result of my third annual scan and I'm still all clear and so thankful. I realise that I have been incredibly lucky. Others have not been so fortunate. In 2018, I backpacked The Great English Walk (583 miles) from Chepstow to Berwick-upon-Tweed to raise money for Ucare (Urology Cancer Research and Education). This charity's aim is to fund the best quality research by bringing together the knowledge and opinions of researchers, clinicians, and allied health professionals to support research and education in urological cancer. It includes kidney, bladder, prostate, testicular and penile cancers.
To celebrate my continuing good health, I plan to walk the South West Coast Path from Minehead to Poole starting on 6 March 2020. The walk should take six weeks. I intend to camp every night, wild camping where possible, and will be blogging at http://litehikersblog.blogspot.com so please follow my progress.
