Story
My eldest son Henry, and I, are cycling from Richmond to Windsor, the route is 55 miles, on Sunday Sep 8th, to raise a sum of money for The Back-Up Trust. There is a team of 23 on the bike ride and we are mainly from a Putney based business networking group that has adopted Back up as our charity and an honorary member of the group.
Back up is a small and very focused national charity, based in Wandsworth, that works with those of all ages suffering from spinal cord injury. i.e., in wheelchairs. As someone (in a wheelchair) succintly stated last week; "Back up show you what can be done in a wheelchair, not what can't!". Have a look at their website to see what they do.
The relationship between our business networking group and Back up started about 6 years ago. Over that time, we have been involved in dragonboat races and other fund raising activities and a number of businesses have provided their services to the charity for free or at a heavily discounted rate. Do have a look at the YouTube video, Yasmin's story, in the gallery below. This excellent short film, made by one of our businesses, really shows how Back up helps.
The distance we are cycling is not exactly olympian, but quite far enough for a slightly portly gentleman of mature years. I have done some training and I now appreciate that Richmond Park has some seriously steep hills. Henry is relying on youth and natural fitness to get him to Windsor! My personal opinion is that this could be a hare and tortoise scenario!
