Story
On 13th May 2022 one of the most spectacular people you could ever wish to meet, my wonderful Ian, ended his fight and passed away whilst in the care of the fabulous team at St Wilfrids Hospice, Eastbourne.
Ian was one in a million. He was the most positive, kind and beautiful human. He lived life to the full and loved adventure. Whenever things were tough and life hit lows, he would put it down to being ‘just part of the fun’. Even when in terrible discomfort or pain, Ian would tell me that ‘life is great’, whilst reeling off a long list of plans he intended to complete before he ‘popped his clogs’.
Although those that knew Ian understood that his prognosis was not a good one, his death has left me feeling rather lost. I miss him terribly, but know that in order to keep his memory and spirit alive, I need to adopt his mission of experiencing as much as possible and to push myself, taking opportunities and chances when they arise.
As Ian spent an incredible amount of time working in the skies and with planes, both in the RAF and for BA, I felt that my first escapade in his memory should be airborne.
As a skydive felt a little too common (something Ian could never be accused of), I wanted to try and do something suitably spectacular and have found myself signing up for a wing walk.
I’m hopeful that Ian would approve of this crazy feat, but in order to make sure that my moment of madness is made worthwhile, I will be doing it in aid of St Wilfrids Hospice, Eastbourne. The place that cared for Ian when he was at his most vulnerable and allowed him to pass away peacefully, on his terms, away from a hospital and in the company of his most treasured person.
Fortunately for me, until Ian became unwell I had no first hand knowledge of St Wilfrids and the amazing work that they do. I, alike many people, was blissfully unaware that this incredible place, where people are made to feel safe and at home when their health is at its worst, existed. I had never needed to visit and no one I knew had required it’s hospitality. I can certainly say that It’s not until you see the magical work that St Wilfrids does first hand, that you appreciate just how important it’s existence is!
It is with the above in mind, that I would be eternally grateful for any pennies or pounds that you may be able to contribute towards my first adventure in memory of my glorious E!
Thank you ❤️
