Story
The Great North Run is the largest event in the NETA fundraising calendar. We have a team of around 20 people running for us this year. Please support them!
Hi,
I'm Gemma, a student speech therapist and this is the first time I've ever taken part in the Great North Run!
I'm not a natural runner and this time last year I couldn't run for a bus but I feel so inspired by the work that NETA does that I feel compelled to raise some funds and awareness for this amazing charity and the fantastic work that they do supporting people and their families who have aphasia.
Aphasia (or dysphasia) means problems with communication (speaking, understanding, reading and/or writing). This usually affects people later in life, often after a stroke.
In the North East alone, there is around 58,000 people living with aphasia!
Aphasia can affect every aspect of people’s lives – their social world, relationships and work. Many people with aphasia stop working because of their communication difficulties.
Can you imagine not being able to communicate with family and friends and the frustration and the isolation that you would feel!?
Help me raise funds to help NETA continue their support for people with aphasia and their carers in the North East. Most of the people involved in the charity are people with aphasia or their carers. We want to complement existing services and try and help people get the support they need and want.
