Story
Sadly my granddad passed away 5 years ago, he was living with vascular dementia and suffered a series of mini strokes.
Me and my family watched my granddad turn from an active, intelligent, very independent man with a wicked sense of humor, to someone who became restless, did not cope well with change or unfamiliar environments, suffered mood swings, problems with mobility and towards the end of his life was unable to talk, would not eat and unable to walk.
This was so difficult to witness as the transition happened so quickly! I am so proud of my nan and the love she had for my grandad, as she did the bravest thing. My nan transformed their home to enable my granddad to receive the care and attention he needed from his own home. She tried to keep him mentally active for aslong as possible and everyday washed him, dressed him and feed him. All her own health problems and emotions were put to one side just to ensure he was okay - it takes a strong person and some tough love to go through what she did.
My nan was unable to leave my granddads side as he was as so dependent on her and he was afraid when she was out of sight. Although the whole family were always ready to help out, it's not always easy as people have full time jobs or children to care for. We all noticed there was a huge lack of support services available for them locally and eventually when my nan did receive practical help from care services, it just wasnt always enough. It's a 24 hour job caring for someone with dementia.
I think more help is needed to provide not only more practical support services but emotional and wellbeing services for those caring for the loved one.
This charity is working hard to provide support services for those living with dementia and the families too. For those who have a loved one or family member liviing with this illness will understand the pressures and the emotional experience it is caring for someone with Alzheimer's or Dementia. Please help me achieve my funding target and raise more money for this good cause....I know my granddad would laugh his socks off knowing I was going to jump from a plane!
P.s the 24th of June - the day I do my jump, it would be my granddads birthday so heres to you Arthur! xxx
