Story
Anyone who's seen my Instagram feed knows that over lockdown (all however many of them there have been) one of the things I've loved to do is go for a walk. It has given me time away from my screen, allowed me to get some fresh air, reminded me of how much I love my city, and quite often it's given me the peace and respite we've all needed.
A few months ago, the Gentleman Jack FB group that I'm part of started a Walker Wednesday Group, named after the icon that was Ann Walker. Our aim was to encourage each other to get out and walk more - not any particular amount, just more. Each week we've been set "homework" to keep the walks interesting - assignments have ranged from local art, things that remind us of the show, or faces in unexpected places. More than just getting us to be active the group is such a supportive international network for all things - not just walking.
We wanted to do something to not just get our steps up but to also give a little back to the show that brought us together. The Alzheimer's Society is a charity that's very important to Suranne Jones, through her own family history, so it seemed a natural fit for us to take part in their 850,000 Step Challenge.
The aim is to walk 850,000 steps in three months. Why 850,000? Because there are an estimated 850,000 people with dementia in the UK. It sounds like a huge amount but it equates to about 10k each day - which is actually what I managed to do just commuting back and forth when our days looked a little different.
The past few months have been tough for everyone but coronavirus has hit people affected by dementia the hardest and continues to disrupt lives.
So that's why I'm taking on Step Up for Dementia. Please donate to support me and ensure Alzheimer's Society can be there for the people who need them most.
