Im doing the Great North Run 2021 to support St Teresa's Hospice.
Ive chose this charity as I have worked there for 11 years. I always like to show my support to the Hospice in any way I can and after doing the Great North Run in 2019 Ive decided to do it again.
Ive met some of the most bravest, kind hearted and courageous people on our inpatient unit that will forever hold a place in my heart.
In 2019 I ran the Great North Run for one of the brilliant services St Teresa's has to offer and Im doing it for the same reasons this year.
I would like to raise money for the Family Support Team. They help families who have lost loved ones, grief is a terrible thing to experience of all ages but especially for children.
Ive had first hand experience with this service, my son who was only 9 years old at the time had the weight of the world on his shoulders he really struggled to deal with his own grief from losing his grandparents, with thanks to one of the councillors Ben, he spoke to him over a period of time and helped him realise its good to talk and to share your feelings/problems and not to be scared, he also learned how to use different techniques to calm himself down when he was starting to feel anxious and everything he felt was normal and he wasn’t alone.
They made memory boxes, jars of different coloured sand each colour representing a memory, he wrote his worries on a balloon and when he was ready to, he popped it. I cannot explain how grateful I am for all his help.
This year especially I believe that our Family Support Team will be needed more than ever with everything that has happened this last year.
From March 2020 I witnessed some really heartbreaking situations due to rules changing, families being apart from each other in there final days, the need of masks, gloves and aprons which has taken away physical skin to skin contact, the reassurance of a friendly smile when we walk in a room as they can't see our face, not been able to cuddle someone who's upset or just put your arm around the shoulder of a relative or work colleague, hand on there' hand to make everything seem that little bit easier and we are here to support each other. It’s been really difficult environment to work in.
I have had to speak to the Family Support Team myself as it just got to much my heart is broken for these familys and I will never forget them.
Any donations that I'm able to raise would be really appreciated.
