Story
Update: Thank you so much for supporting us with thoughts, prayers and/or money, at the Palestine 2023 marathon.
Thanks to your donations, we have already raised over £1,800 for the breast cancer centre at the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza, but hopefully with support from others, we will be able to raise even more.
The marathon day (Friday 10th March), was a great day with over 10,000 Palestinian and international runners and/or walkers (adults/children) doing the marathon, half-marathon, 10k and/or 5k 'races'. From Caroline's vantage spot on the Hebron road, she even saw some dogs with numbers on their backs, racing with their owners, there were a few blind runners, and groups of children/adults with learning disabilities etc. There was a party atmosphere, with loud music and cheering crowds at various stages along the way. It was a joyful, if exhausting day!
Initial story:
Gawain Evans has joined Team Amos to run the 2023 Palestine marathon in Bethlehem. In this he will be supported by his Mum (Caroline Evans) who won't be running, but will try to ensure that he has sufficient water and sustenance for the run! Gawain ran his first ever marathon in 2018 (in Palestine) when the temperature rose to 37 degrees, and the water supplies did run out!
(This marathon was set up to raise awareness of the fact that you can't run 26 miles in the Little Town without going through a checkpoint or literally hitting the Wall. Amos works with local partners and grass-route projects to call for a just peace, reconciliation and equal rights for Palesinians and Israelis. We will be raising funds to support the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza, part of Amos Trust's work in the West Bank and Gaza. Most particularly to support the breast cancer centre at the Ahli hospital in Gaza. Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is incredibly difficult for any
woman, wherever they may be, whatever their situation. Receiving this diagnosis if you live in Gaza is even more devastating and complicated. Women in Gaza are three times more likely to die
from breast cancer than in the UK due to a lack of information, social taboos and the ongoing Israeli blockade. Early identification, providing free, easily accessible services and supporting women to meet other women who have been through treatment is vital.
- £10 will allow Al Ahli to teach a woman how to identify a lump and introduce her to available treatments. The aim is that 5,000 women will be taught every year.
-£45 will pay for a woman to have a mammogram. al Ahli aims to screen 3,000 women a year over forty.
-£80 will support a woman who has breast cancer to come to Al Ahli's 'Health, Mind and Body' group, where she will receive phycosocial support, mett other wmen who have received treatment and learn how to talk about her experience.
-£120 will support a woman in obtaining a visa to travel to Jerusalem for treatment.
Thank you for whatever you are able to give. Your support, your kindness and prayers are greatly appreciated by us, the women of Gaza and Amos Trust.
